Hello Neem Tree Press readers! Here’s a throwbac Hello Neem Tree Press readers! Here’s a throwback for you all. We’ll be doing #ThrowbackThursdays from now on to remind everyone – both newer readers and those of you who have been around for years – of some excellent books from our backlist. This month’s posts will be celebrating Women in Translation month (#WITMonth).

Trees for the Absentees by Ahlam Bsharat, translated by Ruth Ahmedzai Kemp, is a transportive novel that uses magical realism to tell a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of occupied Palestine. According to Dr Nora Parr, "What Trees for the Absentees shares with works by authors like Gabriel García Márquez and Jorge Louis Borges is that it finds a way to beautifully express what the ‘real’ cannot."

Bsharat is an award-winning author and activist from a village in Northern Palestine. We’re incredibly proud here at Neem Tree Press to have published two of her books in translation. If you're not yet familiar with her work, please do check out Trees for the Absentees – it's a wonderful read!

What happens to pregnant women when a humanitarian What happens to pregnant women when a humanitarian catastrophe strikes?

#BellyWoman by @benjamblack shines a light on a story often left untold.

May, 2014. Sierra Leone is ranked the country with the highest death rate of pregnant women in the world. The same month, Ebola crosses in from neighbouring Guinea. Arriving a few weeks later, Dr Benjamin Black finds himself at the centre of an exponential Ebola outbreak. From impossible decisions on the maternity ward to moral dilemmas at the Ebola Treatment Centres. One mistake, one error of judgment, could spell disaster.

An eye-opening work of reportage and advocacy, Belly Woman chronicles the inside journey through an unfolding global health crisis and the struggle to save the lives of young mothers. As Black reckons with the demons of the past, he must try to learn the lessons for a different, more resilient, future.

#HeadAboveWater takes the reader on a journey of discovery and adaptations as we accompany the narrator through her experiences with multiple sclerosis (#MS) and #chronicpain.

Shahd Alshammari shares her low points and successful triumphs. She bears her soul to the reader as she struggles to understand and #accept her #condition, MS, which is unpredictable – what you can do at night you might battle to do in the morning. Even the label of ‘disabled’ is hard to adopt as no one can see the #hiddendisability that she carries. It is this instability that strikes a chord with readers who live with some sort of disability or chronic pain as you never know what the next day or hour will be like.

Head Above Water excels in exploring the #mental and #emotional scars of being a mixed-race #disabledwoman in a very traditional and #patriarchal #society.

It is an interesting read that explores the way life changes within a short period with a condition that might be one of the most known in society. Yet, ironically, it’s also the least understood.

For those of you not yet familiar with #BellyWoman by @benjamblack, the book shines a light on how we treat pregnant women in times of crisis. It's a first-hand account of the 2014 Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone and highlights the shocking global disparities in access to maternal and reproductive healthcare.
